Garonga Safari Camp, Makalali Conservancy, Limpopo, South Africa

Garonga Safari Camp promises a ‘safari for the soul’. There is no rushing around of guests armed with binoculars ticking the names of animals and birds on a must-see list. On the contrary, the place has an aura of tranquillity and safari romance that soothes the soul.

This does not mean, though, that you will not see animals of the Big Five. On game-viewing drives, in this Makalali Conservancy wilderness in Limpopo. there is every chance of seeing white rhino, elephant, lion, cheetah, spotted hyaena and even the elusive leopard. Game walks provide a further opportunity to observe animals.

Much of the intimate ambience at Garonga Safari Camp is created by the architecture and interior design of the camp. Colours and styles are borrowed from nature: terracotta tones, curved walls, reed ceilings and mahogany-coloured roof trusses characterise this stylish safari accommodation.

The suites are a dreamy affair. White canvas, soft lighting, fine linen and a four-poster bed combine to create a space for romance, relaxation, reflection or meditation. A private deck, shaded by large ebony trees and hung with a hammock, aids the journey towards enlightenment.

For further de-stressing, you can relax in the swimming pool or enjoy an aromatherapy massage, a reflexology session or reiki treatment. Alternatively, you could be fed exquisitely tasty morsels around the pool or out in the bush. Sumptuous picnic baskets are a specialty and the wine cellar stocks a great range of quality South African wines.

If this sounds like it might be a holistic romantic honeymoon made in heaven, you could be right. The romance of safari won’t be lacking on the sleepout deck opposite a waterhole where you can spend a night under the stars surrounded by a flowing mosquito net.
